Masterclass, Symposium and Concerts

 

Montecastelli (PI), March 5–12, 2026

Experience a unique artistic journey in the atmospheric setting of Montecastelli. This symposium offers an intensive exploration of Franz Schubert’s masterpiece Winterreise, merging world-class musical coaching with profound academic reflection. Under the guidance of baritone Christian Gerhaher and pianist James Cheung, participants will delve into the vocal and pianistic nuances of the cycle, complemented by seminars on poetics, declamation, and the role of innovation and aesthetics in the arts.

Participation Information

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Selected Course Attendees: 6 vocal students. (Requested to send 2 videos with 2 songs of Schubert's Winterreise to be eligible. Only the first 60 applications will be considered personally by Christian Gerhaher)

    • Fee: €600 (includes accommodation and board)

    • Scholarships: Available based on need

  • Full Access Auditors: Full access to all events and sessions (first come, first served)

    • ​Fee: €700 (€600 early bird discount); accommodation/board not included. Request information about accommodation availability using the application and info form

  • Academic Free Access: Complimentary auditor status for Italian students (room and board not included, registration mandatory) 

​

The masterclass is open exclusively to professional singers or voice students. The maximum age for applicants is 32.
